Mac tips for windows switchers
Learn how to perform some common tasks on your new Mac.
Click the right corner of your Apple mouse, or click with two fingers on your Apple trackpad. You can change this in System Preferences.
Scroll, swipe, click
Click away with a finger, or two. Set up your settings for scroll direction, swipe gestures, and button assignments in Mouse and Trackpad preferences in System Preferences.
Close & resize windows
Buttons for closing, minimizing, and maximizing a window are in the upper-left corner of the window.
Use Spotlight to quickly find and open apps, documents, and other files.
You can use Launchpad and the Dock to open your apps. Add an app from Applications by dragging it to the dock. Remove an app by dragging it to your Finder space or right click > Options > Remove from Dock.
Browse for files
Looking for a document, image, or application? Find everything by clicking Finder on your Dock.
Throw files away
Temporarily delete files by dragging them to the Trash on your dock. You can also delete a file by holding the command button and press delete or right click on the file and select Move to Trash.
Click on the Trash to retrieve files or delete them permanently.
Tip: Accidentally deleted a file? Just hold the Command button and press Z to undo the action.
Right click on a file and select Rename, or click the file once to select it, then press the Return key and type a new name. Press Return when done.
Preview files on your Mac using Quick Look. Right click on a file and select Quick Look, or click the file once to select it then press Space bar.
Back up files with Time Machine
Time Machine keeps a copy of all your files, and it remembers how your system looked on any given day.
Command is your new CTRL
Many Mac keyboard combinations use the Command (⌘) key. Here are common keyboard shortcuts that you should remember:
Command + X
Command + C
Command + V
Command + Z
Command + P
Command + W
Command + Tab
Command + Q
Command + Delete
Command + Space bar
Force quit app
Option + Command + Esc
Whole screen: Shift + Command + 3 Window selected/opened: Shift + Command + 4 + Space bar
Selected part of screen: Shift + Command + 4 / Shift + Command + 5
